District 127 has partnered with Plumbers Union Local 130 to provide 22 students with a hands-on opportunity to explore a career in the plumbing trade. Through a 16-week pre-apprenticeship program, students meet twice a week after school to gain real-world skills and experiences that connect directly to post-secondary pathways.
Midway through the program, D127 Board members had the opportunity to see the program in action. Traveling by bus with the students to Local 130’s facility in Volo, they observed the unique blend of mentorship and skill-building the students receive. From applying measurement techniques to crafting PVC pipe designs and testing their blueprints with running water, the students showcased their growing expertise in the trades through engaging, authentic assessments.
Board members were impressed by the personalized guidance provided by experienced apprentices and the value of gaining real-world experience during high school. This partnership underscores the district’s commitment to fostering meaningful connections between education and future careers.
At District 127, we believe in relevant, engaging, authentic learning. Programs like this, developed in collaboration with community partners, are central to our mission to expand opportunities for internships, work-based learning, and career exploration. By creating these pathways, we ensure our students are prepared for whatever future they choose, whether it’s entering the workforce, pursuing higher education, or following their passions.
This initiative with Local 130 is a powerful example of how strong community partnerships can help students build the skills, confidence, and connections they need to thrive beyond graduation.
