Grayslake Community High School District 127 is proud to announce that Danielle Hegerty, an American history teacher at Grayslake Central High School, has won the prestigious Gilder Lehrman 2024 Illinois History Teacher of the Year Award. This recognition highlights her exceptional contributions to history education and her commitment to fostering a love of history in her students. Presented annually by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, the award honors one K–12 teacher from each state, the District of Columbia, Department of Defense schools, and United States Territories.
Hegerty has long had an interest in history. Growing up right outside of New York City, she was nine years old when 9/11 happened. Hegerty shares that, “Living through that experience in a community deeply affected by the event stuck with me,” and the ways history influences American events and culture today.
History education plays a crucial role in shaping informed and engaged citizens, and as a history teacher, Hegerty strives to emphasize the importance of critical thinking and literacy in understanding historical narratives and their relevance to today's society. "Teaching history allows me to instill an appreciation of our nation’s history in young adults. By exposing students to diverse perspectives, they can identify with the people and history of the United States, promoting a sense of belonging and civic engagement,” says Hegerty. “The historical content through which these skills are taught fosters an interest in communal involvement, historic preservation, and civic engagement in young adults to pass onto future generations.”
Danielle credits her colleagues for their unwavering support. "I'd like to thank my coworker Ashley Edwards for nominating me for this award. My coworkers, who work alongside me in classrooms every day, give me endless encouragement, support, and inspiration," she says.
“Students in Mrs. Hegerty's classes gain more than just historical knowledge — they develop critical thinking skills, reading comprehension, and writing skills that will serve them well in their life after high school,” says Jason Janczak, Social Studies Chair at Grayslake Central High School. “This is a fitting honor for an outstanding teacher.”
"Well-deserved congratulations to Danielle for earning this award. Awards mean so much to our D127 staff and community because they amplify the daily work happening in our high schools. What educators like Danielle are doing in the classroom is highly impactful and deserving of recognition on a national stage,” says Superintendent Dr. Mikkel Storaasli. “I am not one bit surprised — but I am filled with pride — to have Danielle honored in this memorable and meaningful way."
Grayslake Community High School District 127 congratulates Danielle Hegerty on her incredible win and celebrates her dedication to history education. Her innovative teaching methods and passion for history continue to inspire students and colleagues alike, and we could not be more proud of her achievement.
